Key Points:
- Samsung will completely discontinue support for Tizen OS on smartwatches by the end of 2025.
- New Tizen content will no longer be available in the Galaxy Store starting today.
- Existing Tizen OS downloads will remain on devices until September 30, 2025.
Samsung is officially sunsetting its Tizen operating system, with full support ending by late 2025. This move follows the company’s shift to Wear OS for its flagship smartwatches, beginning with the Galaxy Watch 4. The transition marks the end of an era for Tizen, which once powered Samsung’s Galaxy Watch lineup and its Active 1 and 2 models.
Tizen OS had a mixed reception during its tenure, providing a functional, if not universally acclaimed, platform for Samsung’s smartwatches. It managed to hold its ground in a competitive market, even as Wear OS struggled to gain a solid foothold among Android OEMs.
Since the launch of the Galaxy Watch 4, Samsung has partnered with Google to create a hybrid OS, branded as One UI Watch, which has significantly enhanced smartwatch performance. This collaboration underscored Samsung’s strategic shift away from Tizen.
According to a recent Reddit post, Samsung is informing users that Tizen OS will lose full support by the end of 2025. The initial phase of this transition begins today, with the Galaxy Store no longer accepting new Tizen Watch content. Samsung has stated that while services related to Tizen will cease, existing downloads will remain available on devices until September 30, 2025.
This announcement is not unexpected, given that Samsung no longer sells Tizen-powered smartwatches. The company had previously committed to supporting these devices only through 2023, and the final phase-out aligns with this timeline. As Tizen OS approaches its sunset, Samsung continues to focus on its future with Wear OS and the advancements brought by One UI Watch.
