WhatsApp keeps on making changes in its functionalities and the recent modification seems to be terrifying for those, who accumulate excessive data on this online messaging platform.
According to the information, Google and WhatsApp recently announced a change where WhatsApp chats and media backups on Android will start counting toward your Google Account cloud storage limit starting December 2023.
It means Android users will now need to manage their WhatsApp backups more carefully to ensure they don’t exceed the free 15GB cloud storage limit provided by Google Drive. This change aligns WhatsApp’s backup experience on Android with that of other platforms.
Meanwhile, the Android backups will continue to operate seamlessly as long as there is adequate storage space available in the user’s Google Account. However, if a user’s storage limit is reached, they will need to free up space to resume backups.
Google provides various storage management tools to help users free up space on their accounts, such as identifying and removing large files or photos with a single tap. Users can also directly delete items from WhatsApp to reduce the storage consumed by future backups.
But what if your 15GB storage gets filled with important data, that you can’t delete or shift anywhere? So to help users in this condition, Google offers additional storage options through its Google One subscription service, starting at Rs 149 per month for 100GB of storage.

- Going forward, WhatsApp backup experience on Android will be in line with how it works on other platforms, with the added benefit of Google’s 15 GB of storage available at no charge. We’ll continue to work with WhatsApp to provide you with reliable and secure backup support.”
