Samsung is poised to unleash its most ambitious software update in years with OneUI 7. While details remain shrouded in rumor, tantalizing glimpses suggest a radical departure for the Korean tech giant. Yet, amidst the promise of innovation, echoes of familiar design philosophies are hard to ignore.
The most striking change is a wholesale reimagining of OneUI’s visual identity. Icons, color palettes, and overall aesthetics are reportedly undergoing a substantial transformation. The camera app, a focal point for many smartphone users, is also in line for a complete overhaul. Rumored enhancements include a streamlined interface and more intuitive access to essential controls, relocated to the bottom of the screen for easier thumb reach. Additionally, a dedicated shortcut is said to be in the works, promising quicker access to advanced camera settings.
However, these purported innovations are accompanied by design choices that bear an uncanny resemblance to other operating systems. The notification shade, for instance, is rumored to adopt a dual-column layout, mirroring the approach seen in Xiaomi’s HyperOS and Apple’s iOS. Similarly, the lock screen is expected to introduce customizable “quick actions,” a feature that has been a staple of iOS for years.
While such design borrowings can be seen as a strategic move to capitalize on proven user experiences, they also raise questions about Samsung’s originality. The extent to which these elements are mere inspirations or outright copies remains to be seen.
As with any rumor mill, a degree of skepticism is warranted. The veracity of these leaks is uncertain, and the final product may diverge significantly from the current speculation. Nevertheless, the prospect of a OneUI 7 that blends bold innovation with familiar comforts is undoubtedly intriguing. Whether it will be hailed as a triumph of user-centric design or criticized for lacking originality is a matter for time and the eventual unveiling to decide.
As promised, here are (so far) OneUI 7 features Sammy will introduce at SDC24.
TLDR: you expect OneUI 7 to be heavily inspired by iOS 18. pic.twitter.com/SicX4D8mvK— Chun Bhai (@chunvn8888) July 18, 2024
