Samsung’s memory chips on a space mission for stellar performance

Key Points:

  • Samsung to test memory chip reliability in space via a domestic verification satellite launched in 2025.
  • This initiative strengthens Samsung’s position as a leading memory supplier for diverse applications, including harsh space environments.
  • Samsung’s 2024 Sustainability Report highlights significant progress towards net zero emissions, waste reduction, and responsible sourcing.

Hitting the Final Frontier: Testing Memory Chip Durability in Space

Samsung is taking a bold step towards establishing itself as the memory supplier of choice for the space industry. The company is collaborating with Nara Space Technology, a Korean micro-satellite startup, to send memory chips on a space mission. These chips will be integrated into a domestic component verification satellite scheduled for launch on the South Korean Nuri rocket in 2025. The primary objective of this mission is to rigorously test the reliability of Samsung’s memory semiconductors in the harsh environment of space.

This initiative aligns with Samsung’s ambition to become a leading memory provider for all applications, including the demanding requirements of space exploration. As the space industry experiences significant growth, this test serves as a crucial opportunity for Samsung to showcase the resilience and functionality of its memory products under extreme conditions.

Sustainability Efforts Gaining Momentum

Samsung recently unveiled its 2024 Sustainability Report, detailing the company’s significant progress towards achieving its environmental goals. These goals include net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2050, workforce diversification, and enhanced device security.

The report highlights the success of the Device eXperience (DX) division in achieving a remarkable 93.4% renewable energy conversion rate in 2023. Furthermore, the DX division significantly expanded its e-waste recovery and recycling programs across over 70 countries. In a move towards a circular economy, Samsung also managed to incorporate recycled resin in 25% of its manufactured plastic parts. The Galaxy S24 series exemplifies this commitment, using not only more recycled plastic but also becoming the company’s first to integrate recycled rare earth elements.

Beyond the DX division, the Device Solutions (DS) division played a crucial role in driving Samsung towards its net zero goals. The DS arm implemented new process gas treatment facilities and waste heat recovery systems, additionally securing renewable energy from solar power plants. These combined efforts resulted in an impressive 11.6% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by the DS division in 2023 compared to the previous year.

Samsung’s sustainability efforts extend beyond environmental concerns. The company received Platinum certification from the Alliance for Water Stewardship for several facilities, demonstrating responsible water management practices. Additionally, Samsung is committed to fostering diversity and inclusion, with a specific goal of doubling the number of female executives by 2030. Furthermore, the establishment of Stellar Forest – a workplace designed to create sustainable jobs for individuals with developmental disabilities – exemplifies the company’s dedication to social responsibility.

Security and Privacy Remain a Top Priority

Samsung places great emphasis on safeguarding its customers’ privacy and security. The company has integrated its robust Samsung Knox platform into home appliances, expanding its reach beyond mobile devices and TVs. Moreover, Samsung has extended the firmware support period for select mobile devices, like the Galaxy S24, ensuring access to critical security updates for up to seven years.

By embarking on this space mission and continuing its dedication to sustainability and responsible business practices, Samsung is solidifying its position as a technology leader committed to innovation, environmental responsibility, and user well-being.
