Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 get dust resistance, new features leaked

In Short:

  • Samsung’s upcoming foldable phones, Z Fold 6 and Flip 6, finally boast dust resistance alongside water resistance.
  • Galaxy Z Fold 6 gets lighter, brighter display, but misses out on premium materials.
  • Galaxy Z Flip 6 sees a camera upgrade, better cooling, and a bigger battery.
  • Both phones borrow Pixel Fold’s dual-screen translation mode.

Samsung’s highly anticipated foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 have leaked once again, revealing the full specifications and features. This leak comes courtesy of marketing images obtained by Evan Blass (@evleaks) and confirms what many users have been waiting for – dust resistance.

Dust Resistance Makes an Appearance

Before this, Samsung’s foldable phones lacked true dust resistance. While the Z Flip and Fold 2 offered hinge brushes to deter debris, their effectiveness was limited. The Z Fold 3 and Flip 3 addressed this with water resistance, but dust remained a concern.

The leaked marketing materials suggest both Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 will boast an IP48 rating, signifying improved dust and water resistance. The water resistance remains the same (represented by the second number), but dust protection is finally here. An IP rating of 4 indicates protection against particles exceeding 1mm, offering some level of safeguard against dust ingress. While this might not be perfect, it’s a significant step forward for Samsung’s foldables.

Galaxy Z Fold 6: Lighter, Brighter, But No Material Upgrade

The leak delves deeper into specific features for each phone. The Z Fold 6 highlights a welcome reduction in weight, tipping the scales at 239g compared to the Fold 5’s 253g. The inner display gets a significant boost in brightness, reaching a peak of 2,600 nits, 1.5 times brighter than its predecessor. While the camera system remains unchanged, Samsung emphasizes improvements achieved through AI processing.

The marketing materials mention the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor contributing to better battery life, although the battery capacity itself remains the same. Interestingly, the Z Fold 6 forgoes the premium materials found in the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Aluminum replaces titanium, and the outer display utilizes Gorilla Glass Victus 2 instead of Armor Glass. This is surprising considering the rumored price hike for the Z Fold 6.

Galaxy Z Flip 6: Camera Upgrade, Cooling Improvement, and Slimmer Design

The Galaxy Z Flip 6, on the other hand, receives some notable upgrades. As reported in an earlier leak, the Flip 6 sports a 50MP main camera. It also premieres a vapor chamber cooling system, a first for the Flip series. This addition should enhance thermal management during demanding tasks. The battery capacity sees a bump to 4,000mAh from the Flip 5’s 3,700mAh, and remarkably, the phone manages to be 0.2mm thinner when folded despite the larger battery.

Dual-Screen Translation Mode Inspired by Pixel Fold

Samsung has been placing a strong emphasis on translation features within its Galaxy AI suite. The leaked materials hint at a new translation capability that leverages both displays on the Z Fold 6 and Flip 6. This concept might sound familiar because Google introduced a similar feature on the Pixel Fold last year.

Google’s Pixel Fold offered an “Interpreter Mode” that translated text and voice displayed on the main screen while presenting the translated version on the outer display. This allowed users to conduct two-way conversations without needing to flip the phone. It’s a clever solution, and it appears Samsung is taking inspiration from it.

The leaked marketing materials showcase an update to Samsung’s existing “interpreter” mode, initially introduced with the Galaxy S24 series. This update enables two-way conversations with translations displayed on both the inner and outer displays of the Z Fold 6 and Flip 6, facilitating communication with others.

Samsung explains the feature’s purpose: “Traveling and want to talk to the locals? Whether you want to express yourself, listen to an international conference in a foreign language, or understand your tour guide: the interpreter translates in real time.”

The provided information suggests this feature might be restricted to Flex Mode (unlike the Pixel Fold’s version which only requires the phone to be unfolded) and might also be limited to “Conversation Mode” specifically.

Samsung is scheduled to officially unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 on July 10th. These phones are expected to come equipped with the same Galaxy AI features found on the Galaxy S24 series. Pre-orders for both phones are already underway on Samsung’s website, with a $50 pre-order credit and potential savings of up to.
