Samsung’s August 2024 Security Patch: Key Fixes and Updates
Samsung has unveiled the details of its August 2024 security update. This update will soon be available for its eligible smartphones and tablets, with high-end devices expected to receive it first.
Security Fixes Overview
The August 2024 security patch addresses 50 security issues:
- 35 fixes from Google: Among these, one is critical, while the rest are moderately severe.
- 1 fix from Samsung Semiconductor: Provided by Samsung’s chip-making division.
- 14 Samsung-specific fixes: These apply only to Galaxy devices.
Samsung has detailed 12 of these 14 fixes on its security bulletin webpage. Most of these issues are related to improper access control in various system services, such as ExtControlDeviceService, Galaxy Watch, Knox, and system properties.
Technical Details
The patch addresses several specific problems:
- Out-of-bound issues: Found in functions like libcodec2secmp4vdec.so and libsmat.so.
- Insufficient permission handling: Detected in KnoxDualDARPolicy, SumeNNService, and Telephony.
- Improper input validation: Found in the librtp.so function.
These vulnerabilities could allow attackers to access device information without permission or cause devices to crash. Samsung plans to start rolling out the August 2024 security patch to Galaxy devices this week.
Upcoming Features
With this update, Samsung might also introduce the One UI 6.1.1-based software update to high-end devices. This could include new features and some Galaxy AI capabilities that were first seen in the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6.
