According to a new report, South Korean semiconductor companies are expected to reject DDR3 DRAM orders by 2023. Samsung Electronics will receive DDR3 DRAM orders from end-users by 2022 and ship them by the end of next year.

Currently, Samsung’s DDR4 DRAM is being used for general purposes, but companies are rushing to introduce DDR5 DRAM. Intel and AMD have announced that they will release new PC CPUs that support DDR5 technology later this year. Thus, Samsung and SK Hynix plan to develop DDR5 products in line with the launch of new servers that support DDR5.
Market research firm TrendForce expects DDR3 DRAM prices to rise by up to 5 percent in the second quarter of this year due to a sharp drop in supply. DDR3 prices, which are downside until 2021, are expected to rebound in the first quarter and continue to rise in the second quarter of 2022.
However, while the Korean DRAM manufacturers are accelerating the reduction in DDR3 DRAM production, industry insiders feel that other companies are unlikely to make up the shortfall.
Taiwanese DRAM makers Nanya and Winbond are expanding their DDR3 DRAM production facilities, although their new production lines will begin in 2023 or 2024. Chinese companies such as CXMT and Giga Devices are still showing poor product yields.
Although Samsung declined to confirm reports from Taiwanese media outlets, some experts predicted that the release of the Samsung DDR3 DRAM would not stop immediately.
