Samsung recently tested 30 glasses-type wearable devices to verify Relumino’s suitability for use at the Gyeonggi City Wellness Center for the Disabled and actor and director Song Seung-hwan, who was an early user.
The company has taken an important first step towards the distribution of Relumino, a visual aid solution for the blind with low vision.
Returning light to the blind with low vision
Samsung Electronics Relumino includes ‘Relumino App’, a smartphone image processing software that can improve the recognition rate of objects by using the residual vision of people with low vision, and ‘Glass’, a glasses-type wearable device.

Install the app on your smartphone and use a wired connection with a glass and USB cable. It is intended for use by people with low vision who remain with residual vision, which accounts for about 90% of blind people.
Images of life captured through the camera mounted on Relumino Glass are converted into a form that can increase the object recognition rate of people with low vision impairment through image processing such as outline emphasis, zoom, and color inversion/contrast in the Relumino app on smartphones.
The Relumino app has a UX that uses ‘tactile senses’ so that people with low vision can easily operate it without looking at the smartphone screen. Users can view the improved image in real-time through the glass’s display.
Depending on the degree or type of visual impairment of the user, it can also be individually customized for user-specific optimization.
As a result of conducting the Relumino clinical trial in cooperation with Samsung Seoul Hospital, Samsung Electronics confirmed that user safety was verified and that it was superior in performance, fatigue, and usability compared to existing commercial products through separate evaluations of visually impaired users.
