Key Points:

- Samsung’s chip factory in Texas is delayed again and won’t be operational until 2026.
Samsung Sharpens Focus on Home Appliances
Samsung Electronics is doubling down on a core business principle: improving products to drive profits. The company recently held a strategy meeting in South Korea to discuss plans for its home appliance division in the second half of 2024.
Vice Chairman Han Jong-hee led the meeting, attended by over 100 executives and employees. The focus was on streamlining the appliance lineup, aiming to improve operational efficiency and cater better to regional demands. This may involve reducing overlapping products and offering promotions to clear excess inventory.
Texas Chip Factory Faces Further Delay
In a separate development, Samsung’s highly anticipated chip factory in Taylor, Texas, has encountered another delay. Initial plans projected a July 2024 launch, but recent reports suggest operations won’t begin until 2026.
This delay comes despite a significant investment increase by Samsung. The company initially committed $17 billion to the project, but rising construction costs necessitated a bump to $25 billion.
Despite the delay, the project remains significant. The factory is expected to produce cutting-edge 2nm and 4nm chips, employing around 17,000 workers upon completion. Additionally, Samsung is collaborating with local educational institutions to develop a skilled workforce.
The Texas state government has also played a role, offering $6.4 billion in incentives through the CHIPS and Science Act. This act aims to bolster domestic chip production and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers.
The completed factory is expected to significantly boost the Texas economy. Samsung has already collaborated with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to build a new highway connecting the facility to Austin. These improvements highlight the anticipated positive impact of the project.
While the chip factory’s delay is a setback, Samsung remains committed to its home appliance business and contributing to the U.S. semiconductor industry.
