According to new information, Samsung Display has changed its priority in the development of Gen 8 IT OLED panels, the Korean tech firm is planning to delay investment in the full-cut, vertical deposition method it has been developing with Japan’s Ulvac.
After delaying the investment with Ulvac Japan, Samsung Display is planning to invest in Canon Tokki’s half-cut horizontal deposition method which was under development and is commercialized to supply Apple with OLED panels for iPad tablets.
Samsung Display was developing full-cut vertical deposition equipment with Ulvac to make single-layer OLED panels, or only a single RGB emissive layer, in order to supply panels to Asus and other PC makers. Whereas, the project with Canon Tokki has aimed to manufacture dual-stack tandem OLED panels with dual RGB emissive layers.
The reason behind postponing the project with Ulvac Japan could be the immaturity of the technology and the manufacturing of OLED for Apple products may also be the main reason for this delay because Apple asked its display makers to develop OLED panels that are double-stacked in series.
