Samsung creating hybrid OLED for foldable Apple iPad/iPhone

On foldable phones, we’ve seen so far, creases are the biggest concern that doesn’t look good to anyone, but Samsung managed to take it down to the lowest level with the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Going forward, Apple wants to develop one. Foldable iPhone that will have “no creases”.

As reported by AppleInsider, according to Korean media outlet TheElec, Apple wants Samsung Display and LG Display to develop foldable screens for the iPhone, which will not wear out. As reported, the first-gen foldable iPhone may come equipped with a hybrid OLED panel to offer a creaseless foldable screen.

Sources at TheElec revealed that Apple is working to make the creases and small crumples disappear that can appear on highly foldable screens when folded. To do this, the US tech giant is seeking display suppliers LG and Samsung to develop hybrid OLED panels.

Samsung is the most trusted and leading vendor not only in smartphones but also in the foldable smartphone segment. Its biggest rival Apple is silent on the foldable iPhone plans, but it is quietly working to ship the first models in the coming years.

Samsung Ultra thin glass

Typical rigid OLED panels use (inflexible) glass as the substrate, while flexible OLED panels manage to use a plastic substrate as additional protection. The rumored hybrid panel will be a combination of both glass and plastic for the OLED panel, which also uses the thin-film encapsulation method.

Apple is expected to use ‘hybrid’ OLED panels in its first OLED iPad that it will launch a few years from now, TheElec has learned.

Last but not least, Samsung and LG Display are currently developing an ultra-thin glass substrate for use in hybrid OLED panels. Both vendors are attempting to make 2 mm thinner glass substrates instead of the 5 mm currently used mostly.

“The technology is currently not near the commercialization stages and will take at least a year from now to develop.”
