Samsung and Naver’s AI chip is more power efficient than NVIDIA

Over the past years, Samsung and Naver have been jointly developing an artificial intelligence (AI) chip, which has now been unveiled. The power efficiency of this new AI chip is approximately eight times greater than chips from competitors like Nvidia.

On December 19, the Ministry of Science and ICT held the 4th Top-Level Strategic Dialogue on AI Semiconductors showcasing the achievements of companies and in this, the AI chip developed by Naver and Samsung was revealed in the form of a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA).

FPGA is a semiconductor that allows developers to modify the design primarily used in the production of prototypes before mass production. This chipset is specialized for inference, the process of producing logical outcomes using new data after an AI model has completed its learning phase.

Naver explained that this AI semiconductor demonstrated eight times greater power efficiency than Nvidia. This was achieved by integrating low-power, compact Double Data Rate (LPDDR) DRAM to improve efficiency.
