Apple has greenlit Samsung Display and LG Display for mass production of OLED panels for the upcoming iPhone 16, signaling a significant boost in the Korean manufacturers’ market position. This approval aligns with projections of the highest iPhone sales Apple has seen in three years, creating an anticipated surge in demand for their displays.
According to BusinessKorea, Samsung Display started the mass production of standard and Pro Max OLED panels this month, while LG Display is poised to begin with panels for the Pro models. Apple is strategically shifting from LCD to OLED displays across its product line, marking a substantial technological advancement.
Samsung Display is set to manufacture 90 million units, while LG Display will produce an estimated 43 million units for the Pro models. Despite Samsung and LG’s advancement, BOE has yet to secure approval due to its production issues with the iPhone 15 series.
Further solidifying their roles in Apple’s supply chain, Samsung Electro-Mechanics and LG Innotek will continue providing essential components. Samsung Electro-Mechanics will supply Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitors (MLCCs), and LG Innotek is expected to deliver camera modules for the iPhone 16. This collaboration not only enhances the quality and capability of the iPhone but also cements the dominance of Samsung and LG in the high-stakes display market.
