Key Points:
- Google Pixel 9 could utilize the latest M14 OLED display panels from Samsung, potentially surpassing the Galaxy S24’s display.
- This would mark the first time Google uses the same generation of OLED materials as Apple’s iPhones.
- M14 panels promise superior brightness, power efficiency, and potentially a more bezel-less design for the Pixel 9.
For years, Google’s Pixel phones lagged behind competitors in display quality. Thankfully, the Pixel 8 rectified this with high-end OLED panels. Now, rumors suggest the Pixel 9 might take things even further, potentially surpassing Samsung’s current flagship display technology.
A recent report indicates Google will equip the Pixel 9 series and the Pixel Fold 2 with Samsung’s latest M14 OLED panels. This development is particularly interesting because Apple is also rumored to utilize the same panels for the iPhone 16 Pro series. If true, this would be a significant leap for Google, as it would be the first time Pixel flagships share the same generation OLED technology as iPhones.
Samsung’s current Galaxy S24 series employs M13 LTPO panels, boasting a peak brightness of 2,600 nits. Given the M14’s newer technology, we can expect the Pixel 9 to offer similar or even better peak brightness. Additionally, sustained brightness levels should see a notable improvement.
Leaks suggest three potential Pixel 9 sizes: 6.03-inch, 6.2-inch, and a 6.7-inch Pixel 9 Pro XL. All three models are rumored to incorporate the advanced M14 panels.
While some Android phones advertise even higher peak brightness, Samsung’s OLED panels consistently outperform them in terms of color accuracy and power efficiency. Furthermore, the M14 panels reportedly enable thinner bezels, contributing to a more immersive, bezel-less phone design.
Gorilla Glass or Gorilla Armor?
The Galaxy S24 Ultra debuted Corning’s innovative Gorilla Armor glass, marking a significant shift from previous Gorilla Glass iterations that prioritized durability. This new glass promises a substantial reduction in screen reflection – up to 75% less. As our phone editor, Will Sattelberg, noted in his Galaxy S24 Ultra review, this feature offers a noticeable improvement in user experience, making the phone more enjoyable to use in various lighting conditions.
While an official announcement is yet to come, it’s unclear if Google will adopt Gorilla Armor for the Pixel 9 series. Including this technology would undoubtedly offer a more significant user experience upgrade compared to just using a newer generation OLED panel.
