Key Points:
- Google Gemini, the company’s large language model companion, might soon offer multiple voice options.
- A new “Voice Selection” feature in the Google app hints at a unified voice experience for both Assistant and Gemini.
- While details are scarce, the update could arrive within the next few months.
For Android users accustomed to a variety of voices for Google Assistant, the singular voice of Gemini, another Google AI assistant, might feel limiting. Here’s some good news: Google appears to be working on expanding voice options for Gemini.
The discovery comes from X/Twitter user @AseembleDebug, who found a new “Gemini Voice” option within the Gemini app’s settings on the latest beta version for Android. While tapping this option currently leads to a blank page, it suggests Google’s plans to introduce a selection of voices within the app itself.
Interestingly, another development points towards a potentially unified voice experience for both Google Assistant and Gemini. App researcher at Android Authority identified a new “Voice Selection” setting within the general settings of the latest Google app beta. This option, described as allowing users to “choose which voice should be preferred for speech responses for Search,” currently offers two voices: “Ruby” for English and “River” for German.
The key distinction lies in the differentiation between this “Voice Selection” and the “Gemini Voice” option within the Gemini app. Additionally, it differs from the existing “Assistant Voice & Sounds” setting in the Google app, which already provides twelve voices for Google Assistant.
This “Voice Selection” ambiguity leads us to believe it might function as a master setting, allowing users to choose a single voice for both Google Assistant and Gemini. This would be a welcome addition, offering consistency across functionalities.
While Google hasn’t provided a concrete timeline for the public release of either the “Gemini Voice” option or the “Voice Selection” feature, considering the company’s usual rollout cadence, we can expect it within the next few months. The addition of voice options will undoubtedly enhance user experience and cater to individual preferences when interacting with Google’s AI assistants.
Gemini on Android will soon get new voices. ✨
