The long-awaited God of War Ragnarök is making its way to PC on September 19th, as announced during Sony’s summer State of Play event. This eagerly anticipated port comes with a fresh trailer and preorders are already live.
God of War Ragnarök continues the gripping narrative of Kratos and his son, Atreus, following their emotional journey in 2018’s God of War. In the previous installment, the duo ventured to scatter Atreus’ mother’s ashes from the highest peak in the nine realms. Now, their lives are disrupted by omens foretelling Ragnarök, an apocalyptic event intertwined with Atreus’ fate. Together and separately, they embark on a perilous quest to thwart Odin’s malevolent plans.
Accompanying the announcement, Sony disclosed that a PlayStation Network account would be necessary for the PC version, sparking debate given the recent backlash over a similar requirement for Helldivers 2. In that case, Sony retracted the demand after intense player criticism.
This swift transition to PC, arriving just over a year post-console release, marks a shift in Sony’s strategy to broaden its reach beyond PlayStation exclusivity. Previous titles like The Last of Us and Horizon Zero Dawn took several years to make the jump to PC.
Interestingly, this comes on the heels of PlayStation’s new CEO, Hermen Hulst, affirming that single-player games would primarily debut on PlayStation consoles before hitting other platforms. This approach has been under scrutiny due to the subpar quality of some initial PC ports. Fans hope that Ragnarök will avoid such pitfalls and deliver a seamless experience on PC.
