Last week, Gmail for Android introduced a change to its notification icon that applied Dynamic Color theming based on the user’s wallpaper. This was in line with Google’s new Material You design language that aims to create a personalized and adaptive interface.
However, the change received negative feedback from many users who found it difficult to distinguish email notifications from other apps and less appealing to look at. As a result, Google has decided to revert the change and bring back the red Gmail icon in notifications.
The change is effective immediately and users can update their Gmail app from the Play Store to see it. With version 2023.06.11.x, the company is rolling out this notification icon change to the Gmail app via a new update.
Google is still working on improving the design of Gmail for large-screen devices such as tablets by adding a navigation rail. This feature is not yet available on the Pixel Tablet as of this release.
