EU regulators want to enforce all smartphone makers to provide at least three years of OS and five years of regular security updates. In addition, officials wish OEMs to deliver the latest security and OS updates “at the latest two months after public release.”
This move is going to become a significant concern for the manufacturers when it comes to software update support from China. Samsung, as well, can feel safe here as it already offers up to 5 years of protection and at least 3 years of major OS updates.

If the proposal becomes law, Samsung will also need to change its software policy, which currently assures at least 2 OS upgrades and 4 years of security patches for all phones. Well, this is no big deal for Samsung as it already retains the crown of the best support provider in the industry.
Apart from Samsung, Google and Apple also offer similar treatments for their smart devices. Following the proposal, the EU wants to force vendors to offer longer software update support not only for flagships but also for less premium and budget phones.
