Google Maps gets a streamlined makeover: Sheets take the wheel on Android

Top 3 Key Points:

  • Google Maps ditches fullscreen menus for a smoother, sheet-based interface on Android.
  • Revamp prioritizes the map with a cleaner look and easier access to travel options.
  • This update focuses on Android users for now, with iOS rollout expected in the future.

Google Maps for Android is undergoing a significant transformation in 2024. Say goodbye to cumbersome fullscreen menus! Google is implementing a brand new sheet-based interface, offering a more streamlined and user-friendly experience.

These sheets, distinguished by their gentle curves, keep the map prominently displayed throughout the app. This not only emphasizes the map as the central focus but also contributes to a lighter and more contemporary aesthetic for Google Maps. Closing these sheets is a breeze – simply tap the new “x” button in the top right corner or swipe back from either edge of the screen.

One noteworthy change comes into play when searching for directions. The initial interface for entering your destination remains familiar, retaining the full screen with transportation options and recent locations. However, once you’ve entered your destination, the focus shifts. The top of the screen now solely displays your starting and ending points, with the option to switch travel modes conveniently relocated to the bottom of the screen for easier access with one hand. This emphasis on sheets extends throughout the entire directions UI.

This redesign wasn’t launched overnight. Google initially tested the sheet-based interface in February, but it was temporarily shelved for further refinement. After incorporating valuable user feedback and making adjustments, Google reintroduced the update for testing in May. Now, in mid-July 2024, the sheet-based redesign is experiencing a wider rollout on the stable channel (version 11.136.x) of Google Maps for Android users. While iOS users will have to wait a bit longer, a similar update is likely on the horizon for Apple devices.

Looking ahead, Google plans to further streamline the bottom bar of the app, consolidating it into just three essential tabs. This commitment to a more user-centric design signifies Google Maps’ dedication to providing a seamless and intuitive navigation experience for Android users.
