Samsung Gears Up for the AI Era: Unveiling next-gen chipmaking roadmap

Samsung is taking a bold step towards the future of artificial intelligence (AI) with the unveiling of its next-generation chipmaking roadmap. Announced in June 2024 at the Samsung Foundry Forum (SFF), the roadmap details the company’s plans for advanced processes like 2nm and 1.4nm, alongside innovative solutions designed to propel the AI era.

This announcement goes beyond just reaffirming Samsung’s commitment to the 1.4nm process (scheduled for mass production in 2027). The company introduced two exciting new additions to its roadmap: the SF2Z and SF4U processes.

The SF2Z process represents a significant leap forward in 2nm technology. By incorporating an optimized backside power delivery network, SF2Z eliminates bottlenecks between power and signal lines. This translates to superior power efficiency, improved performance, and a smaller chip footprint – all crucial factors for high-performance computing applications. While mass production for SF2Z is set for 2027, this technology lays the groundwork for future generations of powerful processors.

On the other hand, the SF4U process focuses on delivering high value at the 4nm node. This variant utilizes optical shrink technology to achieve advancements in power, performance, and area (PPA) without the complexities of a full generational leap. This cost-effective solution is expected to hit the market in 2025, catering to a wider range of applications.

Samsung also emphasized the maturity of its Gate-All-Around (GAA) technology during the SFF. GAA transistors offer significant performance and efficiency improvements compared to traditional FinFET technology. With the planned mass production of the second-generation 3nm process (SF3) later this year, Samsung is poised to deliver GAA technology to its upcoming 2nm processes, paving the way for a new era of chip performance.

This roadmap signifies Samsung’s commitment to remaining at the forefront of chipmaking technology. With advancements like SF2Z and SF4U, the company is well-positioned to address the evolving needs of the AI era, from high-performance computing to cost-effective solutions for a broader market.
