US chip firm Qualcomm hints at reusing Samsung for 3nm GAA: Report

According to the latest report, Qualcomm will continue to use multiple foundries to manufacture its chips, one of its executives said on Tuesday. Qualcomm currently subcontracts all of its 4-nanometer (nm) and 3-nanometer chip work to TSMC, the world’s largest foundry.

McGuire’s comments suggest that the US company may reorder Samsung Foundry for subsequent nodes such as Get-All-Around (GAA). For the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Samsung Foundry was the initial contract manufacturer, but Qualcomm placed an order with TSMC in the second half of last year.

Sources said Samsung’s low yield rate at 4nm was the reason, and U.S. chip company TSMC will order 3nm chips as a result. McGuire said that Qualcomm’s order volume is too large to use a single foundry, and the use of multiple foundries is not only good for supply, but also for cost and scale.

The U.S. company also needs multiple foundries to expand beyond smartphones, he said. Meanwhile, Samsung was the first to start producing 3nm GAA chips despite facing yield difficulties at 4nm.
